The Mental Health America of Hendricks County Presentation Outline

  1. What is it? A not for profit 501 (c) 3 organization and a local chapter of the Mental Health Association in Indiana and an affiliate of the National Mental Health Association through our state chapter.

    1. UWCI (United Way of Central Indiana) 40% - 50%
    2. Memberships
    3. Fund Raising / Special Events / Contributions
    4. Grants

  1. How are we organized?
    1. Volunteer Board of Directors, meeting one a month, serving three (3) year terms, determines policies and funding
    2. Staff – One (1) full time paraprofessional Office Manager, part time professionals (3) Executive Director, Volunteer coordinator, and Education Director.
    3. Volunteers – help with Special Events, clerical tasks, programs, activities, and Friendly visits (Explained later)

     

  2. What is the Mission or purpose of our organization?
    1. To work for mental health of all Americans and gain a victory over mental illness.
    2. Stigma is still very real issue in the identification and treatment of mental illness. Mental illness has a definite biological / genetic / chemical component. Depression is a very treatable but often undiagnosed (e.g. 1 in 4-5 women and 1 in 10 men cope with depression).

  1. What is the Mission or purpose of our organization?

    1. Education in communities and schools

    2. Support Groups -what are, name some, esp. Connection Center

    3. Friendly Visiting - explain volunteer visits with mentally ill and nursing home residents.

    4. Advocacy - spokesman for mentally ill.

  1. How do our clients benefit ?

    1. <Give testimonials from education & support group participants & resource materials.>

    2. <Give testimonials from health care center residents and mentally ill individuals.>

 

  1. What can you do to help ?

  1. Encourage acceptance of others regardless of handicap or those who are different from ourselves and others.  Watch words and expressions.  Value differences in others.  Life would otherwise be dull and boring.  Look for positive in others.  This helps eliminate STIGMA.

  2. Be outspoken with non-accepting others to encourage a positive attitude & acceptance of others.  This helps eliminate STIGMA.

  3. Give volunteer time to MHAHC.  Many opportunities are available especially in friendly visiting, Connection Center, special events, & clerical.

  4. Give financial support to MHAHC

    -- membership each year

    -- memorials for loved ones

    --in your will, planned giving

    -- in a trust
