GRANT WRITING TIPS

BELLLOGO.gif (1336 bytes)

Part 1

To write a successful grant

1. Research grant donors and find a donor who is sympathetic to your cause.

2. Research lists of donors from reference materials at our local libraries.  Danville Public Library is supposed to have the most complete reference section on grants.

3. Be very specific on how, when, and where the grant will be used.

4. Explain the purpose of your organization completely to the grantor including your mission, your clientele, your purpose, and how you will document the results.

5. Be very complete in how the money will be spent.  Include obvious and hidden costs.

6. Become acquainted with the grantor by researching their wanted focus for their monies.  Call them if there are questions on how and when they want grants submitted.  Follow their rules.

Part 2

Needs to be well prepared, thoughtfully planned and concise

Be very familiar with program in which you are seeking funds

Know grantors’ specific requirements, forms, and procedures

If possible attend a grant writing workshop

If possible avoid grant duplications with other organizations

Seek community support for your project and note that in proposal with a letter from that individual or group

Once a project is developed, look for a grantor that their mission matches your project then request a grant application kit

If possible get to personally know the grantor personnel
