Year 2000 In Review--Programs & Activities
MHAHC MISSION STATEMENT-The Mental Health Association in Hendricks County strives to provide information and education on mental health issues and to link Hendricks County citizens with appropriate mental health services.
LITERATURE DISTRIBUTED-8,332 items distributed including 357 pieces on Cummins MHC Outpatient Waiting Room literature rack, 1,240 at libraries in May for Mental Health Month, videotapes, plus numerous items distributed at health fairs, booths, depression screening parenting dames, and Helping Children Through the Divorce programs.
WORKSHOPS/COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS
--338 different parents with children under 18 years of age attended 24 classes (86.5 educational hours) or the court-mandated program "Helping Children Through The Divorce."
--1, 2, 3, 4 Parent!" 3-session 6 hour series was held three times and reached 12 different parents with topics of you and your child, preventing problems, and encouraging positive behavior.
--"Active Parenting Today I" 4-sessions/8 hour series & all-day sessions were held 7 times (3 series+4 all-day sessions) and reached 71 different parents with topics of active and democratic parenting, Instilling courage and self-esteem, understanding your child, developing responsibility, and winning cooperation.
--"Active Parenting of Teens" 4-session/l0 hour series was held twice and reached 28 different parents with same topics above plus the challenge of alcohol/Drugs and parenting and teen sexuality.
--The "Moyers On Addictions" 5-session/7.5 hour series was held once and reached 5 different people with topic of "Portrait of Addiction," "Hijacked Brain", "Next Generation," "Changing Lives," & "Politics of.."
--"You & Your Aging Parent" 3 sessions/7.5 hour series was held once and reached 14 total different individuals desiring to break down barriers, strengthen relationship., understand needs, and foster positive communication with their parents/relative/friends.
--"Grief and the Holidays" 2 hour educational program reached 26 people and provided suggestions and coping techniques for handling holiday feelings plus a memorial candle light ceremony.
--Memorial Service Program (1 hour) for deceased community youth and adolescents reached 29 individuals.
--Presentations on the topics "Your Attitude Becomes You" to 36 total persons in 2 presentations for the Singles Over 40 and Widowed Persons Support Group.
--Presentation to Mom's Club on topics of family issues and depression to 14 moms.
--Many support groups offered additional community mental health programs with their activities.
OTHER EDUCATIONAL/OUTREACH PROGRAMS
--716 information and referral calls/walk-ins--MHAHC participation in United Way "Youth Day of Caring"
--3 different individual received basic clothing/personal care items from MHAHC Emergency Lift.
--Depression Screenings at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Hendricks Community Hospital, Hendricks Community Hospital Wellness Fair, Mental Health Fair (& MHAHC Booth), ATA Airlines, Avon Cub Foods, Rockville Road Krogers, Universal Flavors Company, Goodwill Warehouse, and Substance Abuse Task Force participants for an estimated 890 screenings completed (est. 49~hours total)
--estimated 1,000 additional depression screenings conducted in cooperation with community and county medical clinics, centers, etc. including Healthy Families, New Life Associates Physician, DR’s Hadley & Garnet Harris, Cummins Mental Health Center, Penrod Counseling Center, Community Counseling Center, Inter-Act Counseling. Hendricks Community Hospital Pediatric Unit.
--MHAHC information booths at Avon Heritage Festival, Brownsburg Messiah Lutheran Church Family Festival, and Brownsburg Fire Territory Health Fair.
--MHAHC Parenting booth and Kids Games at Kids Health/Safety/Environmental Fair.

--"May Is Mental Health Month" Community Mental Health Fair (4 hours) & Anxiety Disorders Screening
CHILDHOOD MENTAL HEALTH ACTIVITIES-9,705 Report Card inserts were distributed.
--281 pre-schoolers--feeling/behavior topics- 16 day care center classrooms-75 ed. hours (early childhood
mental health education program)
--1,039 2nd graders-mental health book reading programs of "Don't Pop Your Cork," "Don't Feed the
Monster;" "Don't Rant/Rave," "Don't Despair", "Don't Tell Whoppers" "Shelly/Hypcractivc1".
28 educational hours.
--1,043 first/second/third graders-Kids on the Block Puppet Presentations on problem solving,
handling feelings, attention deficit disorder, coping with divorce plus others-48 educational hours
--655 third graders-"I'm Thumbody Special"-31 educational hours.
--220 third graders--"Respect Yourself and Others. Too"-- 11 educational hours.
--240 fifth graders-"l Like Being Me'1--3 schools-- 10 educational hours.
--541 fifth grader-Anger Control--24 educational hours.
--557 fifth graders-Conflict Resolution--25 educational hours.
--99 seventh graders--Suicide Prevention --1 Jr. high school-"-1 educational hours.
--6S7 eighth graders--"Claire's Story" (Youth Depression~-34 educational hours.
--40 youth, ages 11-14 yrs -Red Cross Child Care Discipline/Child Devel.,--l0 educational hours.
--45 youth, ages 3-9 yrs - Pumsy In Pursuit of Excellence Program —4 educational hours.
--467 eighth graders-Learning Relationship Strategies--20 educational hours
--104 high school junior--Interference: Stigma & Mental Illness-4 educational hours
--est. 250 junior high/high school teens--teen esteem activity & drug prevention message--2 educ. hours
--10 junior high school teens--Junior Mental Health Association "Kids Who Cue" participants--25 prog. hrs
CHRISTMAS GIFT LIFT
--700 different individuals rec'd gifts (Larue Carter/Logansport/Richmond/Cummins MHC/HC Ctrs/Co Hm.
--$1,340,73 was contributed by local businesses/groups/individuals for gift purchases.
--Estimated cash value of donated gifts in box donations + value of donated gifts for Larue Carter/Madison/Richmond/Cummins participants =$6,210.00.
--Cash contributions + value of donated gifts = $7,550.73. Est. total # gifts distributed -2,100
MUTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS--Total""242 participants for 308 hours in 202 different sessions.
--Connections Center-66 sessions for 175 hours with 31 different participants, plus other support groups
including Depression/Manic Depression, Anxiety, Singles Over 40, Grief Bereavement, Widowed Persons, Divorce Recovery, Parents Together learning To Cope, Parents In Charge!, and Chronic Pain Management.
VOLUNTEER SERVICES – Gift Lift 665 hours (138 volunteers)
--Friendly Visiting-286 hours & 29 volunteers --Board Meetings/Committee-est. 400 hours & 18 members
--Fundraising-350 hours (72 volunteers) --Facilitators-34 hours (3 volunteers reporting)

FUND RAISING EFFORTS
--660 wreaths (total all 3 sizes) sold this 12th sale year
--"I'm Thumbody Special" Shirt Sales promotion this program effort & self-esteem
--52 individuals/group/businesses joined MHAHC with paid memberships for a total of $2,175.
--8th Annual Valentine Send A Hug Project provided 424 "HUGS" & gifts from lovable bears!

--mental health education children's books sale (Monsters/Cork/Rant/Despair/Whopper), thanks to Dr Moser.

Volleyball, MHAHC Garage Sale, 3rd Annual GALA/Mega & Boyd's Bean Raffles, Cinergy Employee Incentive Program (Kay Hughes), Connections Center local contributions, 5698 in-kind contributions to Connections Center, foundation grants for Kids on the Block & Early Childhood Mental Health Education Programs and especially United Way Campaign Contributions.
SPECIAL NOTE! MHAHC was named recipient of the Distinguished Chapter Award of the Mental Health Association in Indiana, Inc for excellence in chapter programming and service to the community.
