1999 Year In Review--Programs & Activities

 

MHAHC MISSION STATEMENT--The Mental Health Association in Hendricks County strives to provide information and education on mental health issues and to link Hendricks County citizens with appropriate mental health services.

 

LITERATURE DISTRIBUTION--29120 pieces distributed including 2,169 on depression--11 tapes on the topic of depression, 432 placed on Cummins MHC Outpatient Waiting Room literature rack, 1,444 at libraries in May for Mental Health Month, health fairs, parent packets, and summer/fall booths.

 

WORKSHOPS/COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS

--319 different parents with children under 18 years of age attended 24 classes (80.5 educational hours) of the court-mandated program "Helping Children Through The Divorce."

--4 different parents attended the 4-session/8 hour series "Cooperative Parenting & Divorce" for parents who experience mild to moderate conflict with their ex-spouse or ex-partner concerning parenting roles.

--Depression and Anxiety Disorders Screening Days each were collaborative 4-hour educational efforts with MHAHC, Cummins MHC, and Hendricks Community Hospital. 57 total different individuals attended and completed the inventories, reviewed results with a trained professional, and received additional information. In 15+ hours, an additional 800+ adults were screened for depression at various activities in the county/area.

--"1, 2, 3, 4 Parent!" 3-session/6 hour series was held once and reached 10 different parents with topics of you and your child, preventing problems, and encouraging positive behavior.

--"Active Parenting Today!" 4-session/8 hour series & all day session was held 2 times (1 series+1session) and reached 14 different parents with topics of active and democratic parenting, instilling courage and self-esteem, understanding your child, developing responsibility, and winning cooperation.

--"Active Parenting of Teens!" 4-session/8 hour series was held 1 time and reached 11 different parents with same topics above plus the challenge of alcohol/drugs and parenting and teen sexuality.

--The "Moyers On Addictions" 5-session/10 hour series was held twice and reached 9 different persons with topics of "Portrait of Addiction," "Hijacked Brain," "Next Generation," "Changing Lives," & "Politics of . ."

--"You & Your Aging Parent" 3 session/9 hour series was held once and reached 7 total different individuals desiring to break down barriers, strengthen relationships, understand needs, and foster positive communications with their parent/relative/friend.

--"Grief and the Holidays" 2 hour educational program reached 44 persons and provided suggestions and coping techniques for handling holiday feelings plus a memorial candle-lighting ceremony.

--Presentations on the topics "Assertiveness" to 14 persons at the Avon Library, "Social Health & Volunteerism" to 17 widowed persons, "Managing Anger" to 4 persons at the Avon Library, "Depression & Holidays" to 5 persons at Park Square Manor.

--Many support groups offered additional community mental health programs with their activities.

 

OTHER EDUCATION/OUTREACH PROGRAMS

--594 information and referral calls/walk-ins--MHAHC participation in United Way "Youth Day of Caring."

--2 different individuals received basic clothing/personal care items from MHAHC Emergency Lift.

--Mental Health Presentations &/or Depression Screenings at Avon & Plainfield Kiwanis Clubs, Brownsburg Sertoma Club, Brownsburg Lions Club, Plainfield Women’s Club, Hendricks Co. Step Ahead/First Steps Council, United Wellness Fair (MHAHC booth also), Avon Cub Foods Health Fair, Hendricks Comm. Hospital (national screening/regular health screening), Cummins Mental Health Center (national screening), Indpls. Women’s Conference/Westin, Brownsburg Fire Territory Health Fair (MHAHC booth), Cinergy Agency Fair (MHAHC booth), WQFE Radio Talk Shows (2) with Irma Lee White, Step Ahead/First Steps Health/Safety/Screen Fair (MHAHC booth), County Coalition Against Family Violence Information Exchange (MHAHC booth).

--Co-sponsorships of "Violence/Response" (Zig Zielke) Program with Avon Behavioral Health Care & "Loss & The Holidays" Program with Avon Christian Church

--Stuart Perry Walk through county, Tree Planting, & Program "Journey For Life", 50+ persons attended.

--"May Is Mental Health Month" Community Mental Health Fair (4 hours) & Anxiety Disorders

CHILDHOOD MENTAL HEALTH ACTIVITIES--7,851 Report Card inserts were distributed.

--343 pre-schoolers--feelings/behavior topics--132 presentations--66ed.hours(mental health early ed. prog.)

--815 2nd graders--mental health book reading programs of "Don’t Pop Your Cork," "Don’t Feed the Monster," "Don’t Rant/Rave," "Don’t Despair," "Don’t Tell Whopper," "Shelly/Hyperactive"--6 schools --17.5 educational hours.

--521 third graders--"I’m Thumbody Special"--7 schools--24 educational hours.

--306 third graders--"Respect Yourself and Others, Too"--4 schools--14 educational hours.

--240 fifth graders--"I Like Being Me"--3 schools--10 educational hours.

--211 fifth graders--Anger Control--3 elem. schools/1 intermed. school--9 educational hours.

--211 fifth graders--Conflict Resolution--3 elem. schools/1 intermed. school--9 educational hours.

--99 seventh graders--Suicide Prevention--1 jr hi school--4 educational hours.

--286 eighth graders--"Claire’s Story" (Youth Depression)--2 schools--18 educational hours.

--59 youth, 11-14 yrs--Red Cross Child Care/Discipline/Child Devel.--2 libraries--18 educ. hours.

--429 high school teens--Dangerous Dating--3 schools--63 educational hours.

--285 high school teens--Rape & Sexual Assault Prevention Program--3 schools--17 educational hours.

CHRISTMAS GIFT LIFT

--675 different individuals rec’d gifts(Larue Carter/Logansport/Richmond/Cummins MHC/HC Ctrs/Co. Hm.

--$1,728.14 was contributed by businesses/groups/individuals for gift purchases.

--estimated cash value of donated gifts in box donations=$2,534.05 +$3,441 value of donated gifts for Larue Carter/Madison/Richmond/Cummins participants. Total value of donated gifts=$5,975.05.

--Cash contributions + value of donated gifts = $7,691.37. Est. total # gifts distributed =2,025.

 

MUTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS-Total=242 participants for 478 hours.

--Connections Center-67 sessions for 178 hours with 58 different participants, plus other support groups including Attention Deficit, Depression/Manic Depression, Anxiety, Singles Over 40, Families (of individuals with mental illness), Grief, Widowed Persons, Divorce Recovery, Parents Together Learning To Cope, and Emotional Support Group.

 

VOLUNTEER SERVICES--Gift Lift-413 hours (20 volunteers+groups)

--Friendly Visiting-150 hours & 30 volunteers --Board Meetings/Committees-442 hours & 15 members

--Fundraising-306 hours (74 volunteers) --Facilitators-64 hours (4 volunteers reporting)

--Clerical-189 hours (4 volunteers reporting) --GALA-96 hours (8 volunteers)

 

FUND RAISING EFFORTS

--542 wreaths (total all 3 sizes) sold this 11th sale year

--"I’m Thumbody Special" Shirt Sales promote this program effort & self-esteem.

--60 individuals/groups/businesses joined MHAHC with paid memberships for a total of $2,305.

--7th Annual Valentine Send A Hug Project provided 488 "HUGS" & gifts from lovable bears!

--Food Concessions for Flyer Garage Sale, Plainfield Spring Fest, Danville Fun Feastival, Beasley’s Apple Festival and Santa Shoppe (fudge sales).

--mental health education children’s books sale (Monster/Cork/Rant/Despair/Whopper), thanks to Dr Moser

--Other projects/contributions: Avon Pride H.S. Volleyball, Flyer Garage Sale Booth, MHAHC Garage Sale @ B’burg Lions Club Bldg, 2nd Annual Gala/MEGA & Beanie Baby Raffles/WalMart & Sam’s Club Foundation Matches, Knights "FORE" Mental Health Golf Tournament, PSI Employee Incentive Program (Kay Hughes), Drop In/Connections Center local contributors, Hoover Foundation Kids On The Block Grant, Clowes Memorial Foundation/Anonymous Foundation Giver/Noyes Foundation Grants for Connections Center, and especially United Way Contributions.
